Tidy up and seed sowing

Yesterday, 20 November, the children and I worked out in the garden.

The first job was to weed around the garden borders – this also involved cutting off all of the grass immediately outside the garden area so that seeds will not fall into the garden.  Paul used the sickle bar mower along the edge where possible.  I followed with shears. The shears where also fantastic where the sickle bar mower couldn’t go.  The children weeded the border between the garden and the bathtub.

Tidied edge and no more carrots.

Next the children removed all of the carrots. The carrots and tops were put beside the garden gate as the beginnings of a new garden waste pile.

I used the “garden shark” – hand sickle with a serrated edge, around the globe artichoke plants.  The children and I brought wood chips over and spread them around the plants.

The last job was to sow seeds:
Lettuce – garden salad bowl – between corn rows
Carrot – Baby slenderette and Parisian market
Radish – Cherrybelle and watermelon
Parsnip – The student
Beetroot – Chioggia

Lettuce seeds sown between corn rows.
From back to front: carrots, radishes, parsnips, beetroot.
