Potatoes

Today, 13 Sept, I weeded major weeds and removed spent brassicas.

Then I planted my potatoes for the year.  I planted 5-6 potatoes/row of the following varieties (all from Koanga Gardens) – starting at the end closest to deer fence:
3 rows of Karoro – Creamy skin and creamy, waxy flesh
3 rows of Matariki – White skin, waxy flesh
4 rows of Urenika – Purple skin and flesh
2 rows of Scots – White skin, white flesh, good flavour
3 rows of Whataroa – light purple skin, cream, waxy flesh

The following information is taken from the Koanga Gardens website:

Karoro NZ Heritage Potato

Potato – Karoro

(Solanum tuberosum)

NZ Heritage

This is a creamy skinned potato, with a creamy coloured, very waxy flesh. Deep eyes. It is a small round hard potato, excellent for potato salads, or simply steamed.

Matariki NZ heritage Potatoes

Potato – Matariki

(Solanum tuberosum)

NZ Heritage

Matariki is the same as Karoro in every way, except it’s shape. It grows bigger and more blocky, so that the larger ones from each plant are almost square around the edges. They are quite curvy, bumpy potatoes. Cream skinned and fleshed, the flesh is very dense and waxy, and they are wonderful potatoes cooked anyway except mashing. They make excellent potato salad and roast potatoes and oven baked chips.

Urenika NZ Heritage Potatoes
Urenika Potatoes - Cooked

Potato – Urenika

(Solanum tuberosum)

NZ Heritage

A long potato with dark purple skin and flesh that retains it’s colour when cooked. Waxy when small, floury when large. Great boiled or steamed. Produces big crops but needs a long growing season.

Potato – Scots

(Solanum tuberosum)

Heritage

An old cultivar sent to us by a Scotsman who says they came to this land with his family from the homeland. It is white skinned, white fleshed and has a very good flavour and texture.

Potato – Whataroa

(Solanum tuberosum)

NZ Heritage

A fairly large, irregular, round to oblong shaped potato with a light purple and cream blotchy skin and yellow waxy firm flesh with purple streaks throughout. Great for making oven baked chips or steamed, or in a hangi. A heavy cropper and a good keeper.
