Garlic and completion of beds and paths

It’s been a while since I updated this diary.  A lot has been happening out in the garden.  I’ll recount it day-by-day.

5 July – I planted garlic – 24 rows of 6 and 1 row of 7 cloves – 151 cloves in all.

16 July – Paul and the children completed the edges on the strawberry bed.  The boards are fastened to the stakes with very sturdy metal strips and large screws.  The children moved the tiles from the large path beside last season’s zucchini patch and laid them on the path between the garden and the horse paddock.  That path is 1 tile wide and is now 3 tiles wide, but it took a little work to get there.  Paul had to move the end of each bed to make them in a straight line in order to get 3 rows of tiles to fit correctly (this didn’t happen on the 16th – read on!)  I went to town and bought 2 scoops (2/3 of 1m^3) of bark chips which I spread on the area where the tiles had been beside the zucchini patch.

Bark chips have replaced black plastic tiles beside the old zucchini patch.

18 July – I weeded the strawberry patch, pushed the peastraw against the bed edges and replaced the strawberry cover supports.  Paul and the children completed the edges on the asparagus bed.

19 July – Paul and the children finished the edges on the central garden bed (includes moving the end of the bed).  I cut back the asparagus plants and weeded the bed.

20 July – Paul moved the bed ends of the last 2 garden beds (closest to the glasshouse) and finished making the path between the garden and horse paddock 3 tiles wide.

This path was 1 tile wide

21 July – Paul and Suzanna finished the edges of the last 2 garden beds.

All bed edges and paths are now completed.  The garden really does look GREAT!  Now it’s up to me to finish tidying the beds for winter (before the winter is over!) – weeding, re-laying the sprinkler system, manuring beds, covering beds with peastraw.
