Tidy up and seeds

13 Jan was the day for removal of brassicas that were finished – broccoli, cauliflower and the extra cabbages.  Because I plant 3 seeds in each punnet hole and don’t throw any away, there are always a few small plants that aren’t worth keeping.

I also pulled out the peas and road beans as they had browned off, and the remaining radishes as they had finished flowering.  I leave brassicas, radishes etc to flower as it attracts bees and beneficial insects.

All of these plants went to the impost bin.  It’s pretty full now, lots of great stuff for the bugs to work on so I can put it on the garden in spring!

Before removing the peas and broad beans, I collected seeds.  Unfortunately earwigs had beaten me to many of the peas that I had left on the plants for seeds.

The seeds I collected are:

Southland snow           Henry’s sugar snap       Wando                                                  Broad bean

Unwin’s king size            Henry’s salad         Broad bean
