Tomatoes

Yesterday, the tomato harvest began.  It looks like it’ll be a good tomato year.  There are large numbers of green fruit on the plants.  YUM!  I also picked several zucchini of medium size and the first of the cucumbers both lemon and green apple varieties.

Tomatoes: large round red = Island Bay, large multi-lobed yellow with pink blush = Dagma’s perfection, small red with green stripes = tigerella, heart shaped red/pink fruit = from Anne Pears.
Yellow round = lemon cucumber, green round = green apple cucumber.

I took a single fruit of Dagma’s perfection, Island Bay and 3 Tigerella to use for seed for next year.  Today I cut the fruit in half, squeezed the seeds into jars and half-filled the jars with water.  In a few days, there will be a smelly mouldy layer on the top.  I will then rinse the seeds well and spread them on paper towels to dry.  Then they’re ready for planting out next year!

The cape gooseberries are still producing large quantities of fruit.
