Weeding, planting seedlings

It’s been a busy few weeks in the garden…

30 Sept – It’s asparagus time!  I picked the first asparagus today – Yum!

7 Oct – Suzanna helped me weed the beds, paths and edges of the garden area.  It was also time to pick the first of the broad beans and rhubarb.

8 Oct – It was a big morning of tidying in the vegetable garden.  I removed the brussel sprouts, mizuna and fennel plants.  I also tided the rhubarb, celery and silver beet – mainly removing the developing flower heads.  The last thing for the morning was to get the sprinklers sorted out, including those in the tunnel houses.

9 Oct – It was Ben’s turn to help in the garden (3.5 hours!!).  We repaired the tunnel houses – the plastic covering had torn loose in a few places because of the strong winds last week.  We re-nailed the board that holds the plastic on and taped the plastic inside and out.

The next step was to plant seedlings:
Zucchini x 4
Pumpkins – Oil seed x 9, Zambezi gem x 2
Corn x 14
Beans – Scarlett runner x 4, Peans x 4, Gila Indian x 4
Fennel (bulb) x 4
Silver beet x 4
Brassicas – Cabbage x 6, Cauliflower x 10, Broccoli x 10

The last thing for the day was to cover the bed to protect it from the birds and weather.  We used the hoops that F. Rice gave me, blue string to make a backbone and mikroclima cloth to cover it all.

12 Oct – I planted the tomato seedlings – 1 variety in each tunnel house (12 x Island Bay, 11 x Dagma).
