Yesterday, I removed old plants from the garden beds – broccoli, cabbages, brussel sprouts, rocket, mizuna and lettuces.
In the space left by the lettuces, I sowed carrot seeds – Manchester table (3 small rows on tape) and Akaroa long red (seeds from Koanga Gardens). They are under the cover to the right of the second photo.
I began weeding the paths and beds. First thing to go was the weed hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta) – it has small white flowers and seed pods that explode when the seeds are ripe. A few of the plants exploded, the rest went to the garden waste pile.
While weeding the paths, I found 3 lettuce plants. Rather than throw these in the compost, I moved them into the garden. They are under the cover on the left in the second photo. They will most likely bolt after having there roots disturbed, but they may continue growing – it’s worth a try.
I also weeded the whole of the old strawberry bed.
