Spring harvests, spring cleaning and planting

11 October – Ben and I pulled the twitch out from in one of the tunnel houses.
12 October – I uncovered the pea and scarlett runner bean seedlings in order to harden them off before planting them in the garden.  I also erected poles for the scarlett runners to climb and ensured that the sprinklers are working.
13 October – The asparagus flood begins for the season.
Asparagus in the garden (unfortunately, it doesn’t show up very well.)
The garlic is growing well, as are the broad beans.

15 October – I sowed more basil seeds (3 x 6 hole punnets)

17 October – It was time to remove the old crops from the garden.
I pulled out 1 wheelbarrow full of lettuce and rocket plants, another of brussel sprouts (6 plants), a third of beetroot and parsnips, and a fourth of silver beet/chard (3 plants).

A full compost bin!

It was so hot (25°C with a hot, dry nor’wester), that I had to wait until late afternoon to plant seedlings.  I planted out the 6 x scarlett runner beans and the 5 types of pea.  Unwin, Henry’s salad, and Bohemian sugar snap each have both sides of a frame. Dwarf maestro and Te Anau salad have one side each of a frame.
