Spring harvest and planting seedlings

We’re eating a lot of artichokes, asparagus and broad beans at the moment.  The neighbours are also benefiting from the large quantities of asparagus and broad beans.

Every 2-3 days I pick at least this quantity of asparagus and broad beans.

It’s been a busy time for planting seedlings.  18 Oct Ben and I planted the main tomato plants in the left hand tunnel house.  One side has 7 Dagma’s perfection, the other has 7 Island Bay.

Tomatoes – the twitch and yard are already growing again…

I’ve been holding off planting the majority of the seedlings as long as possible in case of late frosts.  It was Labour day on 27th, so that is hopefully the magic end of frost date!  The seedlings that I planted out yesterday (29th) really need planting!  The zucchini and oil seed pumpkin plants are getting their first flower buds.

Corn, salad greens, celery, fennel, orach and beans
Oil seed pumpkins and zucchini.

I planted the following:
Celery – 4 clumps of 3
Orach – 3
Fennel – 3
Lettuce – 6 clumps
Tree lettuce – 6 clumps
Rocket – 3 clumps
Mustard lettuce – 3 clumps
Bean – Gila Indian – 6 plants in 4 places.  They do not have a bamboo teepee yet.
Bean – Pean – 6 plants in 4 places.  They do not have a bamboo teepee yet.
*Pumpkin – Oil seed – 6 (3 on each side of the end of bed 2)
*Zucchini – Cocozelle – 2 (both on the north side, east end of bed 1)

*Corn was planted in 4 rows (numbered west to east).
Rows 1-3 are sweet early gem – 4 per row, 2 on the north side and 2 on the south side of the bed.
Row 4 is 2 x golden bantam on the south side and 3 x chieftain on the north side of the bed.

* These seedlings were covered just in case there is a late frost.  I did not have enough covers for all of the corn; the golden bantam and 2 sweet early gem (smallest plants) are not covered.

There are still more to plant.  Most of these (chilli, capsicum, basil and tomatoes) go in the right hand tunnel house.  The others (onions, cucumber, pumpkins and butternut squash) will go in the garden.
